The problem with Symbols, or Guy Fawkes and V is for Vendetta

Jacob T. Levy has an excellent posting on the problem with symbols, namely Guy Fawkes. What Guy Fawkes represents in England is (was?) pretty clear. In North America, or at least the U.S., not so much.
